Subject Language(s): English (eng)
Meeting Description:
Emotions are complex categories that combine cognitive, bodily and socio-cultural dimensions of experience. They represent an area of research that integrates linguistic, psychological, neurological and anthropological lines of inquiry. Ideally, their comprehensive description should account for as many of these factors as possible.
Within linguistics, the principal theoretical paradigms that have sought to explain the structuring of emotions include Cognitive Linguistics and Functional Linguistics. Generally, theoretical conceptual models are proposed, their explanatory power is tested through the model’s ability to produce accurate and predictive descriptions. The empirical research has been based upon introspective, observational and elicited data.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together different cognitive and functional linguistic approaches to emotion studies that are currently prominent in this field of research. The workshop will open with a lecture by one of the most important contributors to linguistic theory on emotions, which will be followed by three representative empirical studies that employ different approaches to observational data.
The questions addressed in this workshop will focus, among others, on the following issues:
- Cross-cultural variation in emotions
- Cognitive and contextual factors in emotions
- Emotions in interaction
- Figurative language in emotions
- Multimodal structure of emotions
- Emotional expression in children
- Structuring of emotion categories
