Advanced Assistant/Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics to Direct Spanish Language Program
Description: The Department of Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University is seeking applications for an advanced assistant professor (tenure track) or associate professor (with tenure) to direct its language program, which serves roughly 2,000 students of Spanish every year, including both heritage and second language learners. The position calls for a scholar in language acquisition or linguistic pedagogy, with a well-articulated and coherent vision of language teaching, curriculum development, assessment, and testing in a multi-semester sequence. Highly developed administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills are critical in this position, which includes the training and supervision of approximately 20 graduate teaching associates and several instructional staff. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out a vigorous program of research and actively contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching.
Qualifications: Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English is required. A PhD in Applied Linguistics, Spanish language pedagogy, or related field is required at the time of hire. Candidates must show evidence of scholarly excellence, a track record of teaching success, and familiarity with high impact learning practices. Candidates should also have a clearly articulated and theoretically grounded approach to language teaching and demonstrable success in program administration. Also desirable are evidence of success with curriculum development and assessment, experience with heritage learners, teaching with technology, and/or Spanish for the professions.
Application Instructions: Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching philosophy, a sample of scholarly writing, and the names of three references. To receive full consideration, please submit application materials by November 15, 2015; references for short-listed candidates will be contacted and requested to submit their letters at a later date. We will interview at the MLA in Austin; search will continue until the position is filled. Application packets should be sent to Applied Linguistics Search Committee at the address below.
Start date: Position begins on August 1, in time for the pre-semester training workshop for graduate teaching associates.
