Call for Proposals

Special Issue of Critical Inquiry in Language Studies: An International Journal 
Reexamining and Reenvisioning Criticality in Language Studies
Guest Editors: Ryuko Kubota and Elizabeth R. Miller

Critical Inquiry in Language Studies announces a call for research article proposals for a 2017 special issue. The proposed articles will adopt a critical, reflexive perspective to criticality in research and practice in language studies. This special issue will reexamine and redefine the current status of criticality by reflecting on what has been accomplished and what transformations have been brought about over the past several decades, as well as what challenges have not yet been overcome, and what new directions should be pursued. These explorations will lead to a renewed vision of critical engagement in language studies. 

Contributions will engage directly with the following conceptual dimensions of criticality: its transformative vision; the interrogation of power and inequality; the connection of local practices to broader social, institutional, political, and economic discourses and systems; reflexive praxis that keeps criticality from becoming a fixed canon; and problematization of the status quo and taken-for-granted assumptions. 

Specifically, we call for proposals that 

1. Reflect on the transformative vision of critical theory by accounting for contexts in which greater social justice has been achieved and through describing theories and practices that led to transformation. 
2. Address the effects of critical approaches to language learning, teaching, and research in international contexts and discuss what constraints and possibilities exist for their implementation and how implementing critical approaches in these contexts leads to new understandings of criticality.
3. Examine how political, economic, and ideological forces impact language policies, practices, and education and explore the need for rethinking critical praxis.
4. Propose new directions for research and praxis by reenvisioning and retheorizing criticality.

Abstracts should describe previously unpublished work. Based on the review of the proposals, authors will be invited to submit papers for possible inclusion in the issue.

Please send a 500-word proposal (plus any relevant references) that clearly identifies how the full-length article will help to reenvision and retheorize criticality and how it will address one or more of the foci listed above. Please include author's name, affiliation, mailing address, email address, telephone and fax numbers, and a 50-word biographical statement. The deadline for proposals is January 1, 2016.
