Focus: CALTS, University of Hyderabad has proposed to organize an intensive short term course in Dravidian Linguistics in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, from 21 to 26 September 2015, commemorating the bicentennial of Francis Whyte Ellis’s (1816) finding of proof of the concept of a family of languages spoken in South India, later called as the Dravidian family of languages or the South Indian Family of languages by Robert Caldwell (1857). The Dravidian Linguistics Association, which met during its annual national conference held between 19-21 June 2015, unanimously decided to launch a yearlong program comprising of an International and a number of national conferences, seminars and workshops. CALTS has approached heads of various institutions to extend their support in this regard, thanks to Prof. Awadhesh K. Mishra, Director, CIIL who has come forward to accept our proposal to conduct the workshop. The course is conducted with an aim to promo
 te the understanding of the Dravidian languages both in terms of descriptive and historical comparative studies. 

The participants will be drawn from research students, young teachers and researchers of linguistics in the universities and institutions across the country.

The course aims not only to help specialist teachers engaged in teaching the discipline but also to provide training for other linguists to teach an historical linguistics course involving Dravidian languages, and to offer practical training in
comparative linguistics for researchers and administrators.

Brief overview of the course:

It will begin with a brief overview of the beginning of
Dravidian historical/comparative linguistics and its important insights (especially developments that led to the formulation of the Dravidian or South-Indian family of languages). This will include a discussion of the proof for the formulation of Dravidian family and the sub groups. It would also focus on the development of Dravidian comparative/historical linguistics and issues that constitute challenges requiring further thinking and research.

The Course will be conducted by the eminent Dravidian historical comparative linguist, Professor P. S. Subrahmanyam (formerly Director, Centre of Advanced Studies in Linguistics, Annamalai University), including Professors H. S. Ananthanarayana (Formerly HoD, CAS in Linguistics, Osmania University), B.R.K. Reddy (formerly Dean, School of Language Development, Telugu Univ.), K.V.Subbarao [formerly Prof. Radhakrishnan Chair Professor, Univ. of Hyderabad], Peri Bhaskararao, IIIT, Hyderabd [formerly ILCAA, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies], S.V. Shanmugam (formerly Director, Centre of Advanced Studies in Linguistics, Annamalai University), K. Rangan, (formerly, Dean, School of Languages and Linguistics, Tamil Univ. Tanjore, and Faculty from CALTS.
