Translation and Interpreting Studies (John Benjamins) invites proposals for a
special thematic issue on community/public service interpreting and
translation (PSIT) and technology to be published in 2018. With technology
becoming increasingly evident in PSIT, it is time to examine its impact and
influence, the opportunities and limitations in research, and its role in
education/training and practice in the field. The guest editors aim to build
on the success of the second InDialog conference dedicated to this topic and
bring together a collection of articles that explore the intersection of
technology and the theory and practice of PSIT.

Articles related to the many guises of PSIT and the various domains in which
it intersects with technology are encouraged. Researchers may wish to consider
the various stakeholders involved, including: policy makers, service
providers, users and commissioners of signed and spoken interpreting services,
researchers, trainers, interpreters, language and cultural mediators, and
students. We welcome both theoretical and data-driven manuscripts that explore
the intersection of technology and PSI/community interpreting.

Of particular interest are manuscripts that explore technology and
PSIT/community interpreting in any of the following topics:

- Growing multilingualism and geographical distances
- PSIT education, training, and evaluation
- Quality assurance and control processes of PSIT/community interpreting
- National and international conflict situations
- PSIT research methodologies, data collection, and analysis
- New and hybrid forms of public service interpreting and translation
- Supervision and psychological support for public service translators and
interpreters
 -Tools, aids, and support for public service translators and interpreters

This list is not exhaustive and proposals that address the intersection of
PSIT/community interpreting and technology are also encouraged. This is an
open call for contributions and not restricted to InDialog attendees.

Timeline for Authors

Abstracts (400-500) words due to guest editors - May 1, 2016
Decision on abstracts - June 1, 2016
Submission of full manuscripts - November 1, 2016
Decisions to authors - March 1, 2017
Final versions of papers due - September 1, 2017
Publication of special issue - Fall 2018

Authors interested in contributing to this special thematic issue should
submit an abstract (400-500 words) to both guest editors: Nike Pokorn
(nike.pokorn at ff.uni-lj.si) and Christopher Mellinger (cmellin2 at kent.edu).
Please include a brief bionote about the authors and their university
affiliation in a separate file. All abstracts and manuscripts should adhere to
the Translation and Interpreting Studies style guide
(http://www.atisa.org/tis-style-sheet).

Authors of abstracts that are accepted for consideration will be invited to
submit a full manuscript that is 6000-7500 words in length (exclusive of
bibliography). Every manuscript will be submitted to a double-blind peer
review that includes at least two referees.
