It's stating the obvious when one says that the learning of foreign languages
​​must be placed in a cultural context. But once we become aware of this
self-evident fact, we will inevitably raise the questions “what?” and “how?”.
Where does the cultural aspect begin and end? The “doing” (material culture)?
The “believing” (intangible culture)? The “saying” (language)? All at once?
Which models and theories should we use to identify and select cultural facts?
If language and culture are not thought about separately, what are the
resources and standards that a learner must acquire to communicate in
culturally appropriate ways, within a linguistic community? How do we set up a
cultural competence that is closely tied to the expression that is strictly
verbal (phonology, grammar, lexicon...) and non-verbal (gestures, facial
expressions, body postures ...)? To teach a language, must we define a common
set of iconic cultural knowledge? How do representations of cultural proximity
/ opacity influence the process of foreign language acquisition? What
strategies do we put in place to decode / deconstruct the cultural pitfalls,
sources of misunderstandings and tensions? Should we teach culture as “the
bottomless pit” or as an established set of cultural data / conventions /
skills?

Such a theme needs to be validated by the most diverse linguistic realities.
Our conference will give voice to researchers and teachers representing
different educational contexts and cultural areas; it will aim to guide the
practice of foreign language teachers by providing some keys that allow them
to question the ways in which any language - even the most ordinary
communicative exchanges, whether written, oral or electronic - bears witness
to the culture (and cultures) which it came from, and with which it is deeply
imbued. Theoretically, any element of language can be a carrier of culture,
but in educational practice, some privileged areas of language focus images of
real communities, which appear, more than others, as reference points that can
give much power to those who know how to use them, and shut out those that are
not able to decipher them.
