Job Title: Post Doc Research Scholar, Linguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology; Sociolinguistics
Description:
The Linguistics Program at North Carolina State University is searching for a
postdoctoral researcher to join an NSF-funded project investigating
phonological variation and change using articulatory imaging and spontaneous
speech. We are examining the relationship between language change and covert
inter-speaker differences in speech production by examining known cases of
covert articulatory variation and their impact on a range of sound patterns
active in Raleigh, NC. The project augments an existing large speech corpus
with ultrasound, aerodynamic, and perception data, and develops new tools for
rapid and flexible analysis of large quantities of ultrasound data.
Responsibilities include performing acoustic analysis of large spontaneous
speech corpora, collecting and analyzing acoustic and articulatory data,
developing new data analysis techniques, training research assistants, and
informal mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students as applicable.
The proposed start date is August 16, 2016.
Minimum experience/education is a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D.,
D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from
initial date of postdoctoral appointment. PhD in Linguistics or closely
related discipline (e.g., Cognitive Science, Computer Science with speech
focus, etc.) is preferred. The ideal applicant would bring expertise in one or
more of the following areas (and curiosity about all of them): articulatory
phonetics, phonological theory, language variation and change, and
computational tools for acoustic/articulatory data analysis.
Applicants will be required to attach a Cover Letter, CV, Contact Information
for 3 References, and a representative sample of research, such as a journal
article (as Other Document 1). Candidate applications will be accepted until
May 13, 2016.

as such can receive donations through the eLinguistics Foundation,
which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal
Tax number is 45-4211155. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial
advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
