Subject: Call for Papers: Caribbean Spanish in the U.S.

Call for Papers: Edited volume on Caribbean Spanish in the U.S.

Demographic estimates produced in 2014 by the American Community Survey of the
U.S. Census Bureau indicate that Hispanics (who outnumbered African Americans
for the first time in 2003) are still the largest minority group in the
country. Within that cluster, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Dominicans comprise,
respectively, the second, third, and fifth largest groups. Thus, 15% of U.S.
Hispanics are speakers of Caribbean descent.

Although, for obvious reasons, the Mexican population will always be
significantly larger, the immigration patterns of Caribbean Hispanics project
an important national trend. The increasing numbers of Puerto Ricans in the
Orlando metropolitan area (Florida) and of Dominicans in New York City are
contributing factors to the status of Latinos as the fastest growing segment
of the nation. Furthermore, the restoration of full diplomatic relations
between the U.S. and Cuban governments has implications that potentially make
Cubans a more influential group of players in the national demographic field.

In light of this scenario, the protagonist role of the varieties of Caribbean
Spanish in the linguistic map of the United States demand specialized
attention from academic scholars. Active research on Cuban, Dominican, and
Puerto Rican Spanish is certainly being undertaken; however, a collection of
works in a single volume on the current status of Caribbean Spanish in the
United States is a void that still needs to be filled.

We invite you to submit an abstract of a paper for an edited volume
tentatively titled Dialects from Tropical Islands: Research on Caribbean
Spanish in the United States. We welcome submissions on any discipline of
linguistic analysis, and especially encourage original studies comparing U.S.
Caribbean communities with communities in the countries of origin. To be
considered for inclusion in this volume we invite all interested colleagues to
submit an abstract in English of their original, unpublished manuscripts in
both PDF file and Word to wilfredo.valentin-marquez at millersville.edu by May
31, 2016. A deadline for the submission of the full manuscript will be
announced at a later date. The editors will employ the double-blind peer
review process for the papers. Both the author and the reviewer will remain
anonymous throughout the review process.

Thank you very much for considering submitting your work for this volume.

Sincerely,
Wilfredo Valentín-Márquez
Melvin González-Rivera

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
