Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago is pleased to
invite applications for a 1-2-year position as Postdoctoral Scholar as a part
of an NSF project on "Models of ASL handshape recognition” (PIs: Diane
Brentari, Karen Livescu). The goal of the work is to advance automatic
recognition and analysis of American Sign Language (ASL). The work includes
both development of core learning/vision/language methods and their
application to the full range of human ASL first- and second-language
learners. 

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in linguistics, psychology,
or language processing, and possess strong skills in programming, experimental
design, and sign language research. Applicants must have PhD in hand prior to
the start date of the position. Experience with motion capture equipment is
preferred. The post-doc will also have opportunities to collaborate with the
faculty in the Linguistics Department, the Center for Gesture, Sign and
Language, and the Toyota Technical Institute of Chicago, and should be able to
interact with colleagues in a broad range of disciplines. Advising and
teaching opportunities are likely to may be available, but are not
requirements of the position.

The start date is flexible, but October 1, 2016 is preferred. Compensation
includes a competitive salary and benefits plan. The position will remain open
