Meeting Description:
We invite academics, students and community members who are interested in
sharing their work and insights into the role and importance of community as
well as other aspects of Intergenerational transmission of minority languages
to this second live-streamed international symposium.
The relative success of intergenerational transmission of minority languages
varies widely depending on a range of factors including the influence of
language ideologies and the level of support for minority language parents,
the presence of minority language support in schools and ECE, the perceived
necessity or desirability of speaking the minority language and pressures from
the majority language.
In addition, the presence or absence of a community where the minority
language is spoken can make all the difference. For example:
- Will opportunities for community interaction support parental decisions to
raise a child as a speaker of the minority language?
- Does local support exist for children to develop minority language literacy
skills?
- Is there a forum for children to interact with each other in the minority
language?
- How much does the young person value their ability to speak their minority
language? Is their competency regarded and valued by their extended family and
the immigrant community? What about nationally?
Registration:
If you plan to attend the symposium in person (rather than online) you are
asked to register your interest by 9 November. There is no charge for
attending. Morning and afternoon tea and a light lunch will be provided.
