Description:
STG seeks a native speaker of Kanuri dialects to provide translation services
in support of U.S. Government requirements. Position requires the linguist to
comprehend mixed-media source material (audio, audio/visual, or print) in the
native language (Kanuri dialects) and to render that material into clear,
complete, idiomatically and grammatically correct English, in verbatim or
summary form as required. Position will work at a corporate location in
central Maryland (Columbia area). Position will normally work Monday through
Friday, but rare occasions of evening or weekend work may be required
The qualified applicant shall be a native speaker of Kanuri, raised to
adulthood (generally regarded as 18 years of age) in a region where the Kanuri
is the most widely used language - most likely Nigeria but not exclusively so.
Maiduguri is the preferred dialect, however speakers of mutually intelligible
dialects will be considered. The qualified applicant must be able to
comprehend formal and informal uses of the native language with a full
understanding of the cultural, social, and political implications of the
language in use, based on an upbringing in the native land. Higher education
in English is strongly preferred. Prior translation experience preferred.
Basic computer and keyboarding skills required. Applicant should be prepared
to provide date and place of birth, date of immigration to the U.S., date U.S.
citizenship granted, and history of formal education and employment.
•Applicant must demonstrate sufficient levels of language/translation
proficiency (generally equivalent to Skill Level of 3 on the ILR Scale) by
successful test performance, which may include translation of written and/or
audio material into English language.
•Security Requirements: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen. Security clearance
is not required to apply; however, applicant must be willing to undergo a
background investigation and polygraph to establish the security access
required for employment.
