Konstanz: PhD position in semantics available
The project Self-Addressed Questions offers a 3-year PhD position in
linguistics/semantics at the University of Konstanz. The project is part of a
larger research unit on Nonstandard Questions at the Interfaces hosted by the
linguistics department at Konstanz.
The project investigates the syntax, meaning and pragmatics of questions that
do not explicitly ask for an answer, such as German “Ob es wohl schneit?”
(“Will it snow, I wonder”) and similar question types in other languages. The
full project proposal with all details can be sent to you on request.
The linguistic department at the University of Konstanz offers a lively and
internationally well-connected research environment where students are
immediately integrated in scholarly life and research at all levels. The
research unit offers PhD students the opportunity to discuss their topics with
fellow students who work on similar issues; we also have funding for PhD
students to attend international workshops and conferences in order to present
results and get new ideas.
As an ideal candidate you have an MA in linguistics or related fields (e.g.,
philosophy, logic, mathematics) and are interested in matters of meaning. You
are willing to engage in formal linguistic theory and have at least a good
understanding of German. Deadline of application is February 12; search will
continue until the position is filled. The envisaged starting date of the
project is April 2016 but can be negotiated. Please send your application
(letter, CV and one written piece of work, such as essay, MA thesis or
similar), preferably as pdf by email to Dr. Regine Eckardt:
