Dr. Rebecca “Becky” Larche Moreton (1937-2016) and her husband, Alfred Elliott
Moreton, III, were killed on January 18, 2016, when their car was struck by a
Ford Explorer on Highway 49 in Simpson County, MS.
Becky, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Jackson, MS on July
27 to the late Thomas Flournoy and Mary Ellen Wilcox Larche. Becky attended
Millsaps College (Jackson, MS) and graduated from the University of
Mississippi with a B.A. in French. She earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from
Tulane University in 2001, investigating Mississippi Gulf Coast French in
Delisle, MS. She was a linguist at the Center for Applied Linguistics in
Washington, D.C. in the 1960s. After returning to Oxford in the 1970s, she was
an active member of the League of Women Voters and worked for the passage of
the Equal Rights Amendment. Later, she worked as a Study Abroad specialist in
the Center for Outreach at the University of Mississippi and as an instructor
of French and linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages.
She married Alfred Elliott Moreton, III in 1959. Becky is survived by a
daughter, Bethany Ellen Moreton and her partner, Pamela Voekel of Fairlee,
Vermont; a son, Alfred Elliot Moreton and partner, Jennifer Smith of Carrboro,
NC. A grandchild is expected in May. Along with her parents, she was preceded
in death by her brother Thomas Flournoy Larche.
Memorial contributions in Becky Moreton’s memory may be made to plant trees in
her beloved Oxford via the CREATE Foundation/Loft for the Oxford re-leaf
project, P.O. Box 1053, Tupelo, MS 38802, http://loftms.org/donate (specifying
the Moreton family in the instructions).
