Dates: 07-Jul-2016 - 09-Jul-2016
Location: Potsdam, Germany
Focus: The Summer School in Historical Linguistics of Germanic Languages at Universität Potsdam (SUM-UP 2016) will focus on word order variation and change in Germanic languages.
Minimum Education Level: MA
Special Qualifications:
Please send your abstract (max. 500 words excluding references) and your letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) to histling at uni-potsdam.de before March 31, 2016. Please indicate which session you wish to present in and which workshop you choose.
The summer school organizers will decide together with the session chairs about the admission. Criteria are the relevance of the topic and the motivation for participating. The own research project does not have to be in an advanced stadium. PhD students being at the beginning of their project are also encouraged to apply.
Description:
The summer school will take place from July 7 to July 9 2016 in the unique
historical setting of the University of Potsdam. The main aim is to bring
together junior and senior researchers in the field of word order variation
and change in Germanic languages. We therefore developed a summer school
structure that allows customized feedback on the individual research of the
participating junior researchers.
The overall topic is subdivided into thematic sessions and a poster session:
- negation phrases
- pro-drop phenomena
- information structure
- verb second
- clause linkage
An additional session will be open for topics that fit in several or none of
the other sessions. Each session will be chaired by a senior researcher and
will include presentations from two junior researchers. The number of junior
researchers will be limited to 20.
Junior researchers (Phd students or Post-Docs) working in one of the
above-mentioned fields are therefore invited to submit an abstract for a
20-minute-presentation and a letter of motivation explaining why they want to
participate in the summer school and what their expectations are.
The summer school will start with a workshop-session. Participants can choose
between a workshop on statistics or on digital tools in historical
linguistics. Please note that - except for the workshop session - there are no
parallel sessions and each participant will be present in every session.
The senior researchers in 2016 will include the following:
Theresa Biberauer, University of Cambridge
Jan-Terje Farlund, University of Oslo
Dagmar Haumann, University of Bergen
Jacob Hoeksema, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
Bettelou Los, University of Edinburgh
Christine Salvesen, University of Oslo
The school will be open for international students of Germanic languages at
PhD level and for PostDocs. The number of participants will be limited to 20.
The language of the summer school will be English.
For successful participation 5ECTS (presentation)/3 ECTS (poster) will be
awarded.
