Two lectureships in English Language/Linguistics of English

The University invites applications for the above two full-time permanent
posts, which are available from 1 September 2016.

Salaries will be within the range from £34,576 to £37,768 per annum (according
to experience).

We wish to recruit two Lecturers in English Language/Linguistics of English. 
The appointed candidates will join the Division of Linguistics and English
Language in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. Applicants must have a
PhD in either English Language or Linguistics with a specific focus on
English, and (near-)native command of the English language.  

The appointed candidates will have track records of excellence in teaching and
research in the field of English Language/Linguistics of English.  One of the
appointed candidates will be a specialist in the history of the English
Language, while the other will be a specialist in some area of synchronic
English usage (incl., but not limited to, qualitative sociolinguistics,
sociopragmatics, stylistics, or computer-mediated communication).  All else
being equal, candidates who can bring new and complementary strengths to the
Division, and who can demonstrate an ability to design and teach undergraduate
course units that are likely to appeal to a broad range of students will be
preferred.

The appointed candidates will be prepared to collaborate closely with
colleagues in the delivery of research-led teaching and supervision at the
undergraduate level within the Division of Linguistics and English Language. 
Depending on level of seniority and previous experience they may also be
expected to teach and provide supervision at postgraduate level. They will
take an active interest in teaching, find ways of encouraging student learning
and be prepared to adopt different methodologies for teaching and assessment
to suit different student groups.  They must also be willing to take
responsibility for administrative tasks within the Division, under the
supervision of the Head of Division, and be eager to make a full commitment to
our ideals of collegiality and academic integrity at all levels of activity. 

Person specification

The post holders will have:

- A PhD in either English Language or Linguistics (with a specific focus on
English), one with a diachronic, the other with a predominantly synchronic,
focus.
- (Near-)native command of spoken and written English.
- An emerging reputation for academic excellence in English
Language/Linguistics of English, demonstrated by a track record of
high-quality outputs.
- Some experience of delivering high-quality research-led teaching in English
Language/Linguistics of English.
- Willingness and ability to take a share of responsibilities for student
progress and academic management.
- A demonstrable commitment to collegiality.

Desirable:

- Willingness and ability to teach one or more of the following: Language and
Gender, World Englishes, Stylistics, Computer-Mediated Communication.
