Subject: Linking Social Effects in Language Processing to Social Effects in Language Evolution

Full Title: Effects in Language Processing to Social Effects in Language Evolution

Date: 15-Sep-2016 - 16-Sep-2016
Location: Nijmegen, Netherlands
Contact Person: Shiri Lev-Ari
Meeting Email: SocLg at mpi.nl
Web Site: http://www.mpi.nl/events/soclg

Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Psycholinguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 01-Jun-2016

Meeting Description:

Languages are learned, used and shaped in social interaction. Therefore,
social factors are likely to play a role in the way that language is learned
and processed, which in turn, influences the form that language takes. Indeed,
research has shown that information is processed and represented differently
depending on the social context. Similarly, recent research on language
evolution has started exploring the relationship between linguistic properties
and the social setting in which languages have evolved. Surprisingly, however,
these two lines of research do not link to each other. The goal of this
workshop is to try to bridge the gap between these two lines of research.

Call for Papers:

Submissions are invited for research on the role that social factors play in
processing, learning or evolution. Works that link social processes in
processing and evolution are particularly welcome.

Submission deadline: 1 June 2016

Abstracts should be submitted to: SocLg at mpi.nl. Abstracts should be no more
than one page long with any combination of text and figures.
