Description:

The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Centre for Linguistics has a
vacancy, starting 1 August 2016, for a Lectureship in English Language (1.0
fte) 

Key responsibilities:

- Teaching and developing courses in English applied linguistics, preferably
in relation to second language teaching and academic writing and/or
translation (Dutch/English), at undergraduate and graduate levels, in lecture
and seminar formats;
- Doing research in the areas specified above;
- Supervision of BA and MA theses, within the BA programme English Language
and Culture and the MA Linguistics tracks English Language & Linguistics and
Translation in Theory & Practice (Dutch/English); and of PhD theses in the
successful candidate’s particular expertise areas within LUCL;
- Contribution to administrative duties within the BA programme English
Language and Culture as well as within LUCL as a whole.

Selection criteria

- A PhD in (English) applied linguistics;
- The ability to teach BA and MA courses within the field of second language
acquisition and second language teaching, academic writing and/or translation
(Dutch/English), and to design new courses in this area, in close cooperation
with colleagues in the BA programme English Language and Culture and LUCL.
Applicants are expected to have skills that are relevant for the BA programme
English Language and Culture comprising the teaching of academic writing,
applied grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation courses in the language
laboratory, presentation skills and rhetoric, as well as translation from
Dutch to English and English to Dutch. Information on the BA programme English

- Excellent research qualities, as demonstrated in a PhD degree on a relevant
topic in the area of applied linguistics, including second language
acquisition, second language teaching and translation studies (candidates
nearing completion of a PhD may also be considered); research experience as
demonstrated in successful project leadership; and an international
publication record, as measured against relative seniority;
- Excellent didactic qualities (teaching evaluations; BKO; etc.);
- Administrative abilities, as measured against relative seniority;
- The successful applicant will be expected to have at least a
near-native-speaker level of competence in English (i.e. equivalent to a C2
qualification in English in the Common European Framework of Reference);
applicants who do not fulfill this requirement will not be considered;
- Non-native speakers of Dutch are expected to speak Dutch fluently within two
years after their appointment.
