Meeting Description:

Typological linguistics generally builds on corpora of natural language
production and informal native-speaker judgments from a wide variety of
languages, including many with very few speakers or signers, and tends to be
quite concerned with the problem of cross-language sampling, in order to base
analyses on a representative sample of possible human languages. Meanwhile,
cross-linguistic experimentation involves artfully selected test materials and
carefully controlled procedures, and tends to compare only two or three
languages at a time, often in convenience samples or samples selected to test
specific cross-language variables, while ignoring other variables that may be
confounded with them.

This workshop aims to bring these two worlds closer together. On the
typological side, there are important issues that can only be addressed with
formal experimentation, including cross-linguistic variation in perception and
comprehension (invisible in production corpora and hard to detect via informal
judgments), and others that could be further elucidated with better
methodological control over data collection. On the experimental side, there
are serious practical challenges to running lab-quality experiments outside of
the lab, especially in populations without formal test-taking traditions, that
must be dealt with if typologically sophisticated experimentation can ever
become possible.

This proposed workshop (pending approval by the host conference of the 50th
Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europea) aims to bring these two
worlds closer together.


2nd Call for Papers:

The deadline for submission has been extended to 15 November 2016.

If approved, the workshop will form part of the 50th Annual Meeting of the
Societas Linguistica Europea (SLE) in Zürich, 10-13 September 2017. For our
workshop proposal, we are soliciting abstracts of 300 words (excluding
references) describing new cross-linguistic experimental studies, new
meta-analyses of existing experiments in two or more languages, and new tools
and techniques aimed at improving the typological and quantitative
sophistication of cross-linguistic experimentation. Abstracts should be
emailed to both of the workshop organizers (Lngmyers at ccu.edu.tw and
tsungyin at ualberta.ca). After the organizers have decided which of the initial
submissions are most appropriate for the workshop, they will include them in
the workshop proposal submitted to the SLE organizers. If approved, the
contributors included in the proposal should submit revised and expanded
abstracts (500 words, excluding references) to join newly solicited abstracts
from additional contributors, which will then be reviewed by the workshop
organizers and SLE.

Important Dates:

15 November 2016: Extended deadline for submission of 300-word abstracts to
the workshop organizers (Lngmyers at ccu.edu.tw and tsungyin at ualberta.ca)

25 November 2016: Notification of initial acceptance by the workshop
organizers and submission of the workshop proposal to SLE

25 December 2016: Notification of acceptance of workshop proposals from SLE
organizers to workshop organizers

15 January 2017: Submission of full abstracts (500 words, excluding
references), taking into account any feedback from the initial submission, for
review by the organizers and SLE

31 March 2017: Notification of acceptance of individual workshop contributions

10-13 September 2017: SLE conference
