Meeting Description:
The 20th Biennial Meeting of the International Circle of Korean Linguistics
(ICKL20) will be held at the University of Helsinki, Finland on 27-29 June
2017. This meeting will be the first international conference since the merger
of the two international scholarly organizations focused on Korean
Linguistics, Harvard-ISOKL (Harvard International Symposium on Korean
Linguistics) and the ICKL (International Circle of Korean Linguistics). These
organizations hav formerly held productive biennial conferences for the last
two decades on alternating years.
The plenary speakers for the meeting are:
Soonja Choi (Univ. of Vienna & San Diego State Univ.)
Sun-‐Ah Jun (UCLA)
Peter Sells (Univ. of York).
Consonant with the Centennial Anniversary of the Independence of Finland, the
ICKL20 conference features two special programs in memory of Gustaf J.
Ramstedt (1873-‐1950), Finland Swedish diplomat and linguist who specialized
in Altaic languages:
(i) Distinguished Lecture by Fred Karlsson (Professor Emeritus, U. of
Helsinki)
(ii) Special Panel on “One Hundred Years of Korean and Japanese since Ramstedt
(1924)”: This panel is dedicated to the legacy of Gustaf Ramstedt who was a
pioneer in the historical-‐comparative linguistics of East Asian languages,
particularly, Korean and Japanese. Panelists include:
Juha Janhunen (Univ. of Helsinki)
Ki-‐Joong Song (Seoul National Univ.)
James Unger (Ohio State Univ.)
Alexander Vovin (Ecole de Hautes Etudes, Paris)
John Whitman (Cornell Univ.)
Final Call for Papers:
This three-day conference is soliciting research papers on all general
aspects of Korean language and linguistics including, but not
limited to: Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics,
Historical-Comparative Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics,
Corpus Linguistics, Language Acquisition, and Language Education.
Abstract Submission:
Abstracts must be submitted as a one-sided, single-spaced page, 1-inch margins
all around, and in Times 12-point font. Format can be .pdf or .doc. If your
abstract includes any special fonts, please submit your file as a .pdf format
and embed the special fonts into the document. The content can be any
combination of text, figures, tables, and examples. References can be
optionally given on the 2nd page.

The abstract submission deadline has been extended to Nov. 30, 2016. For more
