Subject: Italian; Phonology; Pragmatics; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics: Annotator, University of Edinburgh

University or Organization: University of Edinburgh
Job Location: , ---------------- (Telecommute)
Job Title: Annotator
Job Rank: Annotator; Other

Specialty Areas: Phonology; Pragmatics; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics; Gesture

Required Language(s): Italian (ita)

Description:

An EPSRC-funded project, investigating face-to-face dialogue from a
cross-linguistic perspective, is looking for annotators for gesture and
intonation of Italian dialogues.

The gesture annotation will be performed in ELAN, and the intonation
annotation will be performed in Praat. The data to be annotated consists of 1
hour recording of face-to-face dialogue between 2 people.

Preferred skills:

- Native level proficiency of Italian
- Experience with gesture annotation (e.g., identification of gesture
boundaries, gesture phases, gesture labelling, following the well-established
conventions of Kendon and McNeill) and intonation annotation (e.g., ToBI).
- Prior training in the ELAN annotation system (or in an alternative
annotation system such as Anvil and hence the ability to quickly learn ELAN)
and/or Praat)
- If the annotator is interested in working on the gesture annotation, they
must be able to play the video files themselves in ELAN. The files are in the
QuickTime (.mov) format, using the H.264 codec, and have been tested to work
on Macs and Windows 7. Our tests were unfortunately unsuccessful in playing
the files on Linux.
- If the annotator is interested in working on the intonation annotation, they
should be comfortable using Praat
- Minimum commitment of 10-20 hours/week until 30 November 2016.

Please note that due to funding restrictions, only annotators that have the
right to work in the UK will be considered. This means that you do not
necessarily have to be physically present in the UK, but you have to be
eligible to work in the UK.

Remuneration will according to pay scale 05 or 06 depending on experience.

If interested, please send a mail to Katya Saint-Amand at the application
email address below. Please include the following information:

- The type of annotation work you would like to do: gesture, intonation, or
both
- Your experience annotating corpora (if any)
- Your experience in annotation systems such as ELAN, Anvil, Praat (if any)
- Your availability in hours per week until 30 Nov 2016.

Application Deadline: 31-Oct-2016 (Open until filled)
