Subject: General Linguistics; Language Documentation; Language Revitalization; Native American Linguistics: Assistant Professor, University of Arizona, Arizona, USA
University or Organization: University of Arizona
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Arizona, USA
Web Address: http://linguistics.arizona.edu/
Job Title: Assistant Professor of Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Language Documentation; Language Revitalization, Native American Linguistics
Description:
The University of Arizona Department of Linguistics in the College of Social
and Behavioral Sciences is seeking to fill a tenure track position in Native
American linguistics and language revitalization at the Assistant Professor
level beginning in 2017.
The successful applicant will teach relevant courses at both the undergraduate
and graduate level, as well as supervising graduate student theses in the
Masters and PhD programs and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
(especially Indigenous students). The teaching load will be 2/2, i.e. two
(three- or four- unit) courses per semester. The successful applicant will
also conduct and disseminate original research in their areas of
specialization. Original research that is community-based and collaborative,
especially that produced in collaboration with endangered language community
members for the benefit of those communities, is an expected work product of
the successful applicant. In addition, the successful applicant will supervise
graduate teaching and research assistants as needed, and serve on
institutional committees at all levels as needed. Endangered language
community scholars, particularly members of Indigenous language communities,
are especially encouraged to apply.
The Linguistics Department at the University of Arizona is a national leader
in this area, offering a PhD track in Language Revitalization and a Masters in
Native American Linguistics. The resources of the institution, including the
annual American Indian Language Development Institute, which provides tools to
community members working with their own languages, attract many graduate
students with primary or secondary interests in language revitalization and
documentation. AILDI and the Linguistics department have a track record of
nurturing Indigenous scholars and language teachers and community leaders,
supported by multiple grants in a wide range of areas, including capacity
building, grassroots training, and linguistics research.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the University of Arizona
provide extensive resources to support faculty striving to create successful
grant proposals. Arizona is home to a large number of recognized tribal
nations, and there are multiple tribal colleges in the state; the University
supports initiatives to collaborate and foster exchange between institutions.
Review of applications will begin on November 7 and continue until the
position is filled.
Application Deadline: 30-Apr-2017 (Open until filled)
