Special Topic Issue of TESOL Quarterly,
Autumn 2018
At the cross-roads of TESOL and English Medium Instruction

TESOL Quarterly announces a call for abstracts for the 2018 special-topic
issue on TESOL and English Medium Instruction (EMI). This issue of TESOL
Quarterly will explore how TESOL research, and the work of TESOL
practitioners, can inform the growing phenomenon of EMI.
Specific topics include (but are not limited to):
- Language-learning outcomes in an EMI environment
- Explicit versus implicit language learning in EMI contexts
- The effect of EMI on teaching and learning subject content
- English-language support for L2 learners and teachers in an EMI environment
- Teacher and student perceptions in EMI
- Language learning in full vs. partial EMI contexts
- Testing/assessment issues associated with EMI
- Language policy regarding EMI at national and institutional level
- Professional standards (and development) for teachers in an EMI context
- Descriptive studies of the forms of English in use in EMI-settings
- EMI and disciplinary literacy
- sociolinguistic phenomena such as code switching and translanguaging in the
EMI classroom
- EMI in both English L1 and L2 settings
- EMI and other related forms of instruction, such as CLIL, EAP, ESP and
immersion from the perspective of TESOL
Abstracts should describe previously empirically or conceptually based
unpublished work that includes implications for TESOL professionals. In
addition to full-length articles, we solicit papers for Brief Reports and
Summaries, and papers for the Research Issues, Teaching Issues, and Forum
sections, as well as reviews of cutting-edge books in areas relevant to this
special-topic issue.
Please send a 600-word abstract for a full-length article, and a 300-word
abstract for a Brief Report, Research Issues, Teaching Issues, or Forum piece.
For all submissions, send copies of the abstract without author(s) names. On a
separate sheet, include each author’s name, affiliation, mailing address,
e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers, and 50-word biographical statement.
The deadline for abstracts is February 1, 2017. Full manuscripts are due July
1, 2017.
