Meeting Description: 

Accommodation is a concept which was developed in cognitive psychology (J.
Piaget), in sociolinguistics (and more particularly as cultural linguistic
accommodation). In linguistics, the concept was used in the presupposition
theories, in semantics and pragmatics (Beaver 1992, Lewis 1979, Thomason 1990
among others). It will be interesting to review this concept from a variety of
viewpoints. It is suggested to link accommodation to the various phenomena of
interaction, semantic adjustments and interpersonal variations in dialogue.
Lexicon and syntax are also relevant. More unusual issues, such as convergence
in writing, might also be interesting.

The modes of accommodation can also be explored through various types of
discourse: for instance specialized discourse (law, medicine, vulgarization,
trade, etc.) or second language acquisition. Other dimensions, such as gender,
speakers’ origins or social status can also be an object of study.

The goal of this conference is to bring together specialists of different
branches of English and French linguistics (psycholinguistics,
sociolinguistics, pragmatics, morphology and syntax, etc.). The viewpoints of
specialists of other fields (particularly psychology, as the theory of
accommodation is at the interface of language, psychology and philosophy) will
be considered.
