Special Qualifications:
- Pursuing or completed a degree in linguistics, or other related fields.
- Some familiarity with: transcribing content from audio recordings (using Praat and/or Audacity), and phonetic, morphological and morpho-phonological analysis.
- Basic understanding of language teaching and learning methodologies.
- Previous experience with language documentation and revitalization is desirable.
- Aptitude for learning new technologies and processes.
Description:
The Language Conservancy is seeking one or two interns to aid in the
development of two language-learning materials - an audio (or talking)
dictionary and a beginner’s audio course – for Hidatsa, a highly endangered
Siouan language of North Dakota. Specifically, interns will process and
transcribe audio files collected from fieldwork, conduct research on various
domains of Hidatsa (i.e. morphology, syntax, etc.) in an effort to facilitate
sequencing of linguistic content, among other tasks. Interns will gain
significant experience in linguistic analysis (esp. in morphology and
morpho-phonology), applied linguistics, language documentation and
revitalization.
