Description:

The School of Modern Languages in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at
the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta seeks a Visiting Lecturer (PhD
preferred; MA/MS required) or Visiting Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (PhD
required) of Arabic language and cultures, or interdisciplinary Middle East
Studies. We are especially seeking candidates that bring an established record
of program-building in any of these areas. This position begins in August 2017
and includes for full-time professorial appointment a 2/2 teaching assignment,
expectations of active research and scholarship, academic program development,
and is renewable for up to two years. The teaching and service load for
Visiting Lecturers is negotiable. 

The candidate’s qualifications minimum requirements include native or
near-native fluency in both Modern Standard Arabic and at least one Arabic
dialect; scholarly and program building achievements commensurate with title
and rank; documented evidence of successful teaching, including support for
teaching Spoken Arabic alongside MSA, and active engagement with students and
the community.

The successful applicant will demonstrate interest in cross-cultural and
content-based applied language learning, rooted in a command of contemporary
Arabic culture, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Possible areas of
specialization include applied language studies and linguistics, digital media
and humanities, history and sociology, international studies, modern
literature and culture, and Middle East or Mediterranean studies. The
candidate will teach courses in Arabic and in his or her areas of
specialization, and will also contribute to the academic and research
priorities of the School of Modern Languages, which includes globalization,
service learning, and language use in professional contexts.
