Position: Assistant Editor, Asian Studies & Linguistics (Full-Time – 40 hours
per week)

General Overview:

Founded in 1683 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Brill is a leading international

Studies, Asian Studies, Classical Studies, History, Biblical and Religious
Studies, Language & Linguistics, Biology, and International Law. With offices

about 1,000 new books and reference works each year, available in both print
and electronic form. Brill also markets a large number of primary source
research collections and databases. The company’s key customers are academic

The Assistant Editor will serve as assistant to the Senior Acquisitions Editor
and the Publishing Director in the areas of Asian Studies and Linguistics. and
support the development of these publishing programs. The Assistant Editor is
responsible for the organization and project management of these active and
growing programs. Responsibilities also include liaising between production,
finance, and marketing.  

Qualifications:

- College degree required; advanced degree relevant to the fields preferred
- Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of Chinese or another major
Asian language preferred
- Proficiency at Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Punctuality and ability to meet deadlines
- Previous editorial experience strongly preferred
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic with an entrepreneurial spirit
- Goal and results-oriented

Responsibilities:

- Correspond and maintain relationships with authors, journal editors, and
series editors regarding their projects
- Maintain publishing schedules for all works, pre-production through
publication
- Assist with book acquisitions, proposal, and manuscript reviews
- Assist with proofreading covers and front matters
- Update database with latest contact information, project data, and schedules
- Order free copies for authors, journal editors, and series editors
- Request and monitor payments for reviewers, authors, and editors
- Prepare manuscripts for production, including consent to publish forms and
permissions when necessary
- Cooperate with colleagues in the Leiden and Singapore offices
- Coordinate with the marketing department the preparation of e-bulletins,
forthcoming publication announcements, catalogs, flyers, information for the
company web site, Twitter and Facebook posts, and conference participation
- Assist with conferences from the planning stage through post-conference
reports (which may include some travel both nationally and internationally)
