Description:
The research group Quantitative Lexicology and Variational Linguistics at the
Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking for a
PhD-candidate in distributional lexical semantics.
In the context of the Nephological Semantics research programme supervised by
Dirk Geeraerts and Dirk Speelman, the PhD project aims to improve
distributional models for the analysis of lexical polysemy. Using token-based
vector models and visualization techniques, the project will take the form of
a number of case studies gauging the effect of linguistic variable setting on
the distributional analysis of polysemy: how does the introduction of specific
types of lexical information in the distributional models influence the
detection of polysemy?
We offer a fully funded full-time position for 4 years. Remuneration is in
accordance with the official Belgian scales for academic personnel and
bursaries.
The PhD-candidate we ideally have in mind (but categorization is flexible, as
cognitive linguists know) combines:
- a background in lexical or cognitive semantics
- experience with methods of quantitative corpus semantics, such as behavioral
profiles or distributional vector models
- team spirit and strong interpersonal skills.
The working language in the project is English. As Dutch is one of the object
languages included in the project, candidates who do not speak Dutch are
expected to build up a fair level of proficiency in Dutch in the course of the
project.
If you are interested in this PhD-project, please send your cv and a
motivation letter to qlvl at kuleuven.be by August 15. Shortlisted candidates
will be invited for an interview at the end of August or beginning of
September. The project is scheduled to start between October 2017 and January
2018.
