Subject: Courses on Swearing and Taboo Language
In LL issue 28.3311 I posted a query asking for information about courses
being taught on swearing or other types of taboo language.
I received six responses. A summary, including name/institution (dept)/course
or topic, as given by the respondents is listed below:
Betty Birner, Northern Illinois University (English), Topics in Linguistics:
Forbidden language
Israel Cohen, Florida, Anthropomorphic maps and Phono-semantic matching in
idiom formation
Randall Eggert, University of Utah (Linguistics), Bad words and Taboo terms
Benjamin Bergen, UC San Diego (Cognitive Science), What the *#!?: An
uncensored introduction to language
Elizabeth Peterson, University of Helsinki (Modern Languages), Bad English
Penelope O’Connor, Augustana College (Communication studies), Currently
untitled course on swearing for a Liberal Arts First Year Inquiry sequence
I want to thank those who responded for their willingness to share their ideas
and materials with me.
