Description:
The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages seeks a
tenure-track Professor of Arabic at either the Assistant or Associate
Professor rank, to begin in fall 2018. The candidate is expected to have
superior language proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and native or
near-native proficiency in at least one Arabic dialect. The ideal candidate
will pursue research in Arabic language, culture, or literature. Possible
specialization areas include Teaching Arabic as a Second/Foreign language,
heritage language acquisition and teaching, Arabic linguistics, modern Arabic
literature and culture, and cultural studies. The successful candidate should
have a proven track record of language instruction and curriculum design that
is grounded in the tenets of communicative language teaching, and should
possess knowledge of current trends in second/foreign language teaching
methodologies and new technologies in language learning. The successful
candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly
research, teach courses in Arabic language and culture at the undergraduate
level, and contribute appropriate service to the department, college, and
profession. We are especially interested in candidates who demonstrate strong
potential to direct an Arabic language program and successfully lead its
growth, while collaborating with other SDSU communities, such as the Center
for Islamic and Arabic Studies. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level
should present evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly potential.
Candidates at the Associate Professor level must present evidence of teaching
and research achievements commensurate with the appointment with tenure at a
Carnegie Higher Research Activity Institution. A Ph.D. in Linguistics, Arabic
Studies, Middle Eastern Studies or a related field should be in-hand at the
start of the appointment.
