Meeting Description:
The History/ Historiography of Translation: Between the Real and the Virtual
International translation studies colloquium
27-29 November 2018
West University of Timișoara, Romania
Through extensive use of electronic corpora and of the information provided by
parallel, bilingual or multilingual corpora in translation studies, the
ISTTRAROM-Translationes research center seeks to contribute to the systemic
examination of translation issues and to move away from single-sided
approaches (source culture/ language/ text vs target culture/ language/ text)
or out-of-context ones that consider differences from a quantitative
perspective or offer only speculative perspectives on the topic.
Call for Papers:
The ISTTRAROM-Translationes research center – The Faculty of Letters, History
and Theology, Timișoara – organizes the international translation studies
colloquium The History/ Historiography of Translation: Between the Real and
the Virtual.
The participants will be able to approach the topic of the colloquium in
various ways, both through contributions offering a synthetic point of view
and through contributions focusing on a particular aspect (a translator, an
epoch, an approach, or a particular work in the area of translation studies),
or on methodological issues, either intra-disciplinary or interdisciplinary.
This colloquium is meant to foster debates and reflections on the evolution of
research methods and methodologies in translation history and historiography
on the one hand, and, on the other hand, on the relation between the
researcher (historian of translation, teacher), his/ her resources and other
subjects. Another direction of investigation may be the connection between IT
methods and instruments, the specificity of the history/ historiography of
translation and the virtual space, the last as a type of archive that is
continuously expanding and extending. As components of data bases (static
elements), the results of research in the area of the history and
historiography of translation (dynamic elements) become finite and fixed
products, preserved in other archives than the storage unit represented by our
own research. How should we continue to study/ write the history of
translation? How should we continue to research the historiography of
translation? Should we aim for a cyberhistory of translation which would
preserve a sense of the history from which it derives?
