Subject: BLL Thesaurus as Linked Open Data
We are happy to announce the release of the Linked Open Data edition of the
Bibliography of Linguistic Literature (BLL) Thesaurus. It consists of two
differently formalized models and is available from
http://data.linguistik.de/bll/
The Bibliography of Linguistic Literature (BLL) is one of the most
comprehensive linguistic bibliographies worldwide. Dating back as far as 1971,
the BLL lists over 450,000 references and has an annual growth of about 10,000
entries. Besides being a significant source of bibliographic data it also
provides a bilingual, hierarchically organized thesaurus (BLL Thesaurus) in
German and English. The BLL Thesaurus consists of more than 7.600 subject
terms and covers the field of linguistics in its entirety: domains and
sub-domains of linguistics, levels of language description, language
identifiers, theoretical frameworks, etc.
Since 2013, the BLL Thesaurus has also been applied in the context of the
Linguistik portal (www.linguistik.de), an online research tool for the field
of linguistics. The Linguistik portal has recently been connected with the
Linguistic Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud. As part of the data integration
process the BLL Thesaurus was formalized and linked to terminological
repositories within the cloud.
The LOD edition of the BLL Thesaurus consists of a SKOS version and an OWL
model (BLL Ontology). The SKOS version is created in a fully automated manner.
The original hierarchical structure and internal relationships are represented
by means of skos:broader and rdfs:seeAlso. The BLL Ontology is the outcome of
a manual classification and reorganization of the subject headings by means of
rigidly applying OWL/DL constraints. The class hierarchy is expressed by
rdfs:subClassOf. Currently, the BLL Ontology comprises mainly the thesaurus
branches Syntax, Morphology, Phonology and Lexicology.
The BLL, the BLL Thesaurus as well as the Linguistik portal are hosted and
maintained by the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg in
Frankfurt, Germany.
The LOD edition of the BLL Thesaurus is released under Creative Commons
Attribution (CC-BY) license. The dataset is published as RDF/XML, NT und
Turtle.
