Meeting Description:
The Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, University of Uyo, in
collaboration with the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), is planning a
conference on the languages of Nigeria arising from the Nigerian Geopolitical
Languages Survey (NGLS) project. The conference will provide an opportunity to
listen to the reports of the work done so far in the project. This project
conference will, in addition, provide a forum for linkage and collaboration
between speakers of indigenous Nigerian languages, groups and cooperate bodies
interested in the documentation and development of Nigerian languages. There
will also be a platform for sharing and forming working groups to cover the
six geopolitical zones. Beyond that, there will be an opportunity to take
concrete action points and follow-up on the papers that will be received as
well as strategize on how to deal with the issues of the documentation and
development of Nigerian languages in a systematic and sustainable way.
The 1st CLN will mark the 13th year of the NGLS Project, and more importantly
open the discussion to a wider national and international community. While it
opens a discussion to fine-tune the work in progress, it should also provide
an opportunity to strategize on the daunting task of executing what is left to
complete the Project.
