Description:
The School of Languages and Cultures at The University of Sheffield invites
applications for three funded PhD studentships to commence in September 2017.
The positions are open to applicants who hold (or will hold by the start date)
an MA qualification in the areas of Language, Psychology, Computer Science or
related fields, and are intended for writing a PhD dissertation in the
framework of a Leverhulme-funded project led by Dr Dagmar Divjak in
collaboration with Dr Petar Milin.
The project will involve interdisciplinary research in linguistics,
psycholinguistics and computational modelling and we are recruiting 3 PhD
students to assist the team with the research and the dissemination of the
results through conference presentations and journal publications. Details and
requirements for each vacancy can be found below.
More information about the project can be found on https://goo.gl/JWUWQX.
PhD researcher #1 will use experimental techniques to elicit the knowledge
native speakers of Polish have of the case and aspect system of their
language. Knowledge of Polish is essential for this position.
PhD researcher #2 will use experimental techniques to elicit the knowledge
native speakers of English have of the article and tense system of their
language.
PhD researcher #3 will compare a range of machine-learning techniques trained
to handle English articles and tenses and Polish case and aspect systems using
comparable large language corpora for English and Polish.
For selection criteria and details on the application and selection procedure
we refer to https://goo.gl/6jQi33.
All posts offer the opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team consisting of
linguists, psychologists and computer scientists. The team will have access to
brand-new experimental facilities and members will receive training and
development in corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics, in advanced
statistical data analysis as well as in computational modelling and software
engineering, according to their interests and future career plans.
Fees:
Successful candidates will commence study between 1 July and 30 September
2017, and will receive an annual stipend of £14,496, lasting 3 years for
