Meeting Description:
The Conference of the Language Associations of Southern Africa (CLASA) is a
joint conference comprising 5 associations including ALASA (African Languages
Association of Southern Africa), AFRILEX (African Association for
Lexicography, SAALA (Southern African Applied Linguistics Association) ,
SAALT (South African Association for Language Teaching), and LSSA (Linguistics
Society of Southern Africa). The conference theme is ''Multilingualism and
Transformation in the Knowledge Age'' but papers are also welcomed from the
disciplines of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching, Language
Practice, Lexicography and Literature.
The conference is hosted under the auspices of the NRF South African Research
Chair Initiative (SARChI) on Intellectualisation of African Languages,
Multilingualism and Education and the National Institute for Humanities and
Social Sciences' Catalytic Project on Concept Formation in African Languages.
In 2013 Rhodes University's African Language Studies Section in the School of
Languages and Literatures was awarded the prestigious NRF South African
Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) on Intellectualisation of African
Languages, Multilingualism and Education. The primary objective of the
Research Chair is to undertake scientific and innovative research on African
languages, focussing on the role the languages can play in fostering
meaningful participation of all in education, as well as promoting a
multilingual society.
Keynote speakers include: Prof. Laura Downing, Prof. Anna de Fina and Prof.
Tinatin Margalitadze.
Call for Papers:
Conference of the Language Associations of Southern Africa 2017
(LSSA/SAALA/SAALT/ALASA/AFRILEX)
The Local Organising Committee of the 2017 Conference of the Language
Associations of Southern Africa and the respective Associations invites
proposals for paper presentations and poster exhibitions.
Although papers are welcomed which relate to the conference theme,
''Multilingualism and transformation in the knowledge age'', participants may
also submit papers relating any of the following fields regardless of the
conference theme:
- Linguistics
- Applied Linguistics
- Language Practice
- Language Teaching
- Lexicography
- Literature
Abstracts should be submitted by 28 February 2017 to the respective
associations.

Practice, submit through the LSSA & SAALA abstract submission system:

Abstract Requirements:
The abstract body should be between 300 and 400 words. An additional page of
data and/or references may be attached if desired. Generally only one single
authored talk and/or one jointly authored talk should be submitted by any
single applicant.
