Meeting Description:

The Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium is the oldest and largest
gathering of Native Language stakeholders in North America. In its 24th year,
S.I.L.S. continues to be a premier venue, inspiring language revitalization,
the advancement in research, the best practice strategies and more
demonstrations in language development. All this progress plus more, so that
the native language and culture, of all Nations, are not lost forever.


Call for Presentations:

24th Annual Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium
Franklin, Wisconsin – May 26-28, 2017

All Presenters Must Register for the Conference

Proposal Preparation Guidelines:

Send one email with two attachments

1) the proposal form and
2) a 300 word abstract for review by readers

Proposals are due April 1, 2017

Conference Topics Include:

- Culture-based Education
- Language Revitalization
- Immersion Schools and other Paths to Fluency
- Community Organizing/Fund Development
- Research/Assessment/Best Practices
- Technology/Audio/Visual Language Preservation & Revitalization Techniques
- Other American Indian / Indigenous Education Topics
- Elder, Speaker, Teacher and Student Outreach and Recruitment

Types of Presentations:

- Workshops (45 or 105 minutes): Intensive sessions in which participants
learn Native language revitalization best practices and culturally based
education strategies.
- Papers (20 or 45 minutes): A description and/or discussion of something the
presenter(s) is doing or had done related to indigenous education. Presenters
are encouraged to use handouts and audio-visual aids and to present a summary
of the paper rather than read a prepared text.
- Demonstration (45 minutes): Presentation of a specific teaching or testing
technique. Presenters are encouraged to use handouts and audio-visual aids.
Presenters are encouraged to include their audience in their demonstrations.
- Panel Discussion (45 or 105 minutes): Panel presentations provide a forum
for a group to discuss issues related to improving indigenous education and/or
the preparation of teachers for indigenous students.
