Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Morphology; Phonology; Syntax; Typology
Call Deadline: 26-Apr-2017
Meeting Description:
This is a postgraduate workshop on the linguistics of vP held at the
University of Cambridge.
It is now a consensus in the generative literature that there exists a “vP” at
the lower part of the clausal spine. vP forms a domain with various functions:
it is the “thematic” domain where theta roles are encoded and arguments
introduced, the “lexical” domain where verb stems are constructed, the “inner”
domain where interpretation can be non-compositional, the “event” domain where
event situations are structured and classified, and so forth. Syntax,
semantics, morphology and phonology closely interact with one another within
vP, and the multiple functions attributed to it inevitably lead to questions
on its nature. This workshop aims to bring together different perspectives on
the vP domain and foster new ideas on old issues.
This postgraduate workshop will take place on 19th June 2017 in the Department
of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. The
keynote speaker will be Dr. Linnaea Stockall (Queen Mary University of
London).
Call for Papers:
We invite abstracts from postgraduate students and recently successful
doctoral candidates from any institution for oral presentations (30 minutes +
10 minutes questions) or posters on any topics concerning vP from theoretical
and/or empirical standpoints. Relevant topics include but are not limited to:
- vP and aspect/Aktionsart (Ramchand 2008, MacDonald 2008, Travis 2010. . . )
- vP and voice/transitivity (Chomsky 1995, Kratzer 1996, Folli & Harley 2005.
. . )
- vP-internal functional layers (Hale & Keyser 2002, Borer 2005, Mateu 2005,
Pylkkanen 2008. . . )
- vP and case/agreement (Chomsky 2000, Legate 2002, Aldridge 2004. . . )
- Phase(s) in vP (Chomsky 2000, Marantz 2007, Harley 2014. . . )
- The phonology of vP as revealed in e.g. prosody (D’Alessandro & Scheer 2015,
Perry 2016. . . )
- Comparison between vP and other domains (e.g. CP, DP) (Murphy 2016. . . )
- Cross-linguistic variation in vP structure (Borer 2005, 2013. . . )
Please send your submission to camvpworkshop at gmail.com by Wednesday 26 April.
Abstracts should be anonymous and not exceed two pages (Times New Roman, 11pt
or larger, 1 inch / 2.5cm margins, single spacing), including examples,
tables, graphs and selected references. At most two abstracts per author are
permitted, with one abstract being co-authored. Please include your name and
institutional affiliation in the covering email, and state whether the
abstract should be considered for an oral and/or poster presentation.
For more information, please contact Julio Song (cs791 at cam.ac.uk), Jim Baker
(jb750 at cam.ac.uk), or Anna Hollingsworth (avh29 at cam.ac.uk). The website for
