Subject: Webinar, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The Linguistic Society of America is hosting a webinar for linguistics
scholars focused on applying for the National Science Foundation’s Graduate
Research Fellowships (program description at https://www.nsfgrfp.org). This
webinar will present an overview of the NSF GRFP program and tips for
preparing successful applications for potential applicants and their faculty
advisors. You will learn what the GRFP application involves and how to
prepare an application (if you are a student), or how to prepare a letter of
recommendation and mentor students (if you are a faculty member).
The webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 10 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM US
EDT. Register for the webinar at:
https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7004857021411264259
The webinar will be archived to enable later viewing.
Students early in their research training - undergraduates, post bacs, first
or second year graduate students, those whose graduate training was
interrupted, and faculty advisors - are encouraged to attend, especially those
from tribal colleges (TCUs), historically black colleges and universities
(HBCUs), and other minority serving institutions. Although the Linguistic
Society of America is sponsoring this webinar, you do not need to be a member
of the LSA to attend. Please note that members of the LSA will be given first
priority in registration and the focus will be on research in the language
sciences, although there is a significant amount of content that is helpful
for applicants from other disciplines accepting GRFP applications. Attendance
will be capped at 100 attendees, so please sign up early. The webinar will be
recorded and available on the LSA website for those who are unable to attend.
The two-hour webinar will begin with a presentation from NSF Program Officers
Susan Brennan and Colleen Fitzgerald, with an overview of the GRFP. This will
include a program description, benefits of the fellowship, parts of the
application, review criteria, and strategies for putting together a
competitive package. Then recent Fellow Ivy Hauser (University of
Massachusetts Amherst) will participate in a facilitated conversation about
her experience preparing a successful application and the benefits of being a
Fellow. There will also be time for webinar participants to submit questions
for a q&a session at the end of the webinar.
More details on the webinar is available on the LSA's website at
