Week of Signs and Gestures

Date: 12-Jun-2017 - 14-Jun-2017
Location: Stuttgart, Germany
Contact: Daniel Hole
Contact Email: daniel.hole at ling.uni-stuttgart.de
Meeting URL: http://www.srf.uni-stuttgart.de/news/Week_of_Signs_and_Gestures

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Language Family(ies): Sign Language
Meeting Description:

In this workshop, we want to bring together formal linguists working on
gestures and signs and researcher working in more empirical setups. While
there is a tradition of, for example, formal semantic investigation of sign
languages (Lillo-Martin and Klima 1990, work of Schlenker 2009-2017), formal
semantic research of gestures has only just started (Lascaride & Stone 2012,
Ebert & Ebert 2014, Schlenker 2016).
The purpose of this workshop is to advance our understanding of some of the
important issues within gesture and sign research. We will discuss, among
other topics, the semantic-pragmatic modelling of gesture contributions and
their interplay with speech, the projection behavior of gestures, the role of
iconicity, and the notion and possible definition of gesture in sign
languages.
