Description:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Iowa invites
applications from candidates with specializations in Spanish applied
linguistics or second language acquisition, broadly defined, for the position
of Director of Spanish Language Instruction at the rank of Lecturer. This is a
full-time, renewable, non-tenure-track position to begin July 1, 2018. The
initial appointment will be for one year, with a possible re-appointment of up
to two additional years, and the position will be renewable thereafter in
three-year increments, pending collegiate approval and demonstrated excellence
in teaching and program development. Salary and benefits will be commensurate
with experience.
The successful candidate will direct and manage the elementary and
intermediate Spanish program in collaboration with a team of administrative
and instructional staff.
Required qualifications:
- PhD in second language acquisition/applied linguistics or second/foreign
language education with a research and teaching focus in Spanish or in
Hispanic linguistics [degree in hand by August 2018]
- demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish language to native speakers of
English at the university level in the United States
- some supervisory experience
- native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish
- direct experience in computer-assisted language teaching
- demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse
faculty, staff, and students
Desirable qualifications: familiarity with:
- hybrid/blended course development and management
- Languages for Specific Purposes
- instruction of heritage speakers
- experiential learning.
