Description:

The University of Virginia is a top-ranked public research university located
in the beautiful Piedmont region of Virginia, a short drive away from both
Washington, D.C. and the Blue Ridge mountains. The university offers an M.A.
degree in Linguistics, and an M.A. and Ph.D. degree in Linguistic
Anthropology. Competitive funding is available for prospective students
applying to the Interdepartmental M.A. Program in Linguistics.

UVa’s Linguistics MA program especially welcomes applications from students
interested in linguistic fieldwork and/or social approaches to the study of
language. The program is ideally suited for students with an anthropology
background wishing to understand how language factors in their field area;
those preparing to undertake culturally informed language documentation and
description; students interested in functional, typological, cognitive, and
historical approaches to linguistics; and those aiming to conduct
language-focused public outreach in areas such as education and
museums/archives. The program offers a certificate in TESOL theory and
practice.

There are five full-time linguistic anthropologists on UVa’s Linguistics
faculty whose work integrates the study of language with culture and social
life. They have research emphases in cognition; ethics; ethnopoetics and
ethnography of speaking; ideology and philosophy of language; multimodal
semiosis, space and place; language evolution; linguistic prehistory; and
language documentation, archiving, and revitalization. There are also
Linguistics faculty in American Studies; Classics; Education; English;
Psychology; Slavic Languages and Literatures; Spanish, Italian and Portuguese;
and other units.
