Description:
Applications are invited for one doctoral student position in the research
project “The development of verb-initial structures cross-linguistically:
insights from Austroasiatic” hosted at the Department of Comparative
Linguistics, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and to begin on February 1st,
2018. Funding for the position is limited to three years.
Requirements:
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in linguistics received at latest by
the time he/she takes up his/her position in the project. Top candidates will
have excellent results from their Master's degree courses/thesis and a focus
on or interest in linguistic typology, areal linguistics, and language
contact, as well as experience with or interest in fieldwork-based language
documentation and description. Knowledge of Burmese and/or other languages of
South-/Southeast Asia, especially Austroasiatic languages, is an asset, but
not a requirement.
Job description:
The successful applicant will work with the project leader, a post-doc
researcher, and student assistants on a corpus of texts from several
Austroasiatic languages, applying linguistic methodologies to investigate the
development of verb-initial structures in the language family and the areas
where AA languages are spoken.
Apart from working with and developing corpora from published material, field
trips to Myanmar and India to collect specific data are part of the position.
The successful applicant is expected to complete his PhD dissertation at the
University of Zurich within the project. The PhD will be cumulative,
consisting of four papers (published or accepted by a relevant international
journal) within the framework of the project. The exact topics of the papers
will be determined in accordance with the applicant's background and
preferences, and papers may be co-authored with researchers within or outside
the project, but they must reflect original and independent work by the PhD
candidate.

Salary is according to Swiss public employee pay scale (Canton of Zurich).
