Description:
The Department of Linguistics (http://ling.ucsd.edu/) within the Division of
Social Sciences at the UC San Diego invites applications for an Assistant
Teaching Professor position with a specialization in computational and
quantitative approaches to language beginning July 1, 2018. Candidates must
have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field at the time of appointment.
The Assistant Teaching Professor (LPSOE) series parallels that of the
research-focused series, but with emphasis upon excellence in teaching and
other instruction-related activities. Individuals in the position are expected
to provide outstanding teaching, as well as to engage in professional activity
and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and
university. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and,
contingent upon promotion, tenure-paralleling security of employment.
Preferred candidates will be able to teach courses in programming,
statistics/probabilistic methods with a linguistics focus, as well as general
linguistics courses. We also seek candidates who can contribute to
instruction-related activities (e.g. conducting TA training, developing
curricula, creating instructional materials, implementing new technologies,
etc.) at the campus, statewide and national level.
The department is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the
faculty, staff, and student body. We are thus especially interested in
candidates who have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing
to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in
advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence, diversity, and
equity within an academic setting.
Candidates should submit, via online application at the link below:
- a short cover letter describing background and interests
- a CV
- a teaching statement
- documentation of teaching excellence (e.g. links to instructional materials
developed by the candidate, summaries of teaching evaluations, on-line
instructional segments)
- a statement of scholarly activities and their connection to pedagogy
- reprints of up to three representative publications/scholarly articles
- a statement summarizing their contributions (or potential contributions) to
diversity and leadership
(http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/Faculty-Applicant-C2D-info.asp).
Candidates should also arrange for at least three letters of reference
commenting on the candidate's pedagogical skills, among other attributes, to
be submitted via the on-line application system.
Applications received by December 1, 2017 will be given full consideration.
However, the position will remain open until filled.
Salary is commensurate with experience and based on University of California
pay scales.
UCSD is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer with a strong
institutional commitment to academic excellence and diversity and to
addressing dual career issues
(http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/aps/partneropp/). All qualified applicants
will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color,
