Abstract:
The study fills a long-existing gap by investigating the schwa apocope in the
Ripuarian dialect, whose origin can be dated by the concurrent phonologization
of the tonal accent. While the schwa apocope is largely obscured in the
written language because of increasing conservatism in writing, it is possible
to successfully date it. In this connection, important hints are provided by
morphological class changes and switches.
