Description:
The Department of English Language and Literature at San Francisco State
University seeks to fill a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position with
an expected start date of January 18, 2018. We are looking for a candidate
whose teaching competencies encompass a wide variety of linguistic
disciplines. The successful candidate will have a desire and ability to teach
a variety of undergraduate courses (see below). Experience with a broad
constituency of undergraduate student desired. A PhD in linguistics or a
related field is required by the start date of appointment.
Responsibilities: Undergraduate teaching in linguistics and communication and
undergraduate advising. Teaching assignment for Spring 2018 will include three
courses:
ENG 422 History of the English Language
The background, sources, and development of English; examinations of writing
of historical periods of the language.
ENG 424 Phonology and Morphology
Theories and techniques of phonological and morphological analysis using data
from English and other languages.
AND one section of either:
ENG 210 Oral Communication
Multilingual Development of skills in listening, speech delivery, and
preparation and presentation of informative and persuasive speeches.
ENG 425 Language in Context
Introduction to language variation relating to age, ethnicity, gender, region,
class, occupation; language and culture; multilingualism.
Teaching load for Fall 2018 will include four courses, comprised of some
combination of those listed above.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State
University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement, and other benefits.

recommendation are also required, and the cover letter should include the
names of the two academic references who applicants have asked to send
letters.
