Call Deadline: 15-Nov-2017
Meeting Description:
Non-adjacent dependencies between segments, the treatment of phonological
processes that apply at a distance have always been a challenge and a central
issue in phonological theory.
This workshop will provide a forum for discussing controversies and recent
developments in the analysis of long distance segmental phenomena focussing on
vowel harmony, consonant harmony, and consonant-vowel harmony.
Workshop organizers: Péter Rebrus and Miklós Törkenczy
Call for Papers:
This workshop will provide a forum for discussing controversies and recent
developments in the analysis of long distance segmental phenomena focussing on
vowel harmony, consonant harmony, and consonant-vowel harmony. We invite
abstracts bearing on such long-distance effects from various perspectives.
Presentations are invited to address (but are not limited to) the following
questions and topics:
- Vowel neutrality: what makes a vowel neutral?
- Typology: what is a possible harmony system?
- Variation in harmony
- Harmony and (morphological/prosodic) domains
- Disharmony and antiharmony in harmony systems
- Exceptions in harmony
- Approaches to harmony: representational, non-representational, experimental
- ''Unnatural'' constraints on harmony
- Phonetic basis of harmonic phenomena
- Spreading vs. agreement
- Differences/similarities between vowel and consonant harmony
- Experimental approaches to harmony
Abstract submission:
This workshop will precede the main colloquium of GLOW41. The same abstract
may not be submitted to both the main colloquium and the workshop.
No abstract may be longer than 2 pages (A4 or letter size) with 1in margins,
set single spaced in a 12pt font. Abstracts must be anonymous, self references
should be avoided. Please make sure that there is no indication of the
authors' identity in the file submitted.
You can submit an abstract to the workshop via Easychair:
