Description:
The University of Victoria’s Department of Indigenous Education (Victoria,
Canada) invites applications for a limited term Post-Doctoral Fellowship
position. The appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension
for a second year. The position is salaried at $48,940 per annum and available
after June 1, 2018, until filled.
The six-year NEȾOLṈEW̱ ‘One mind, one people’ Research Partnership between
UVIC and nine Indigenous community Partners works to understand and enhance
Indigenous adults’ contributions to reviving Indigenous languages in Canada.
Our study captures the overlapping sites where Indigenous adults learn their
language, as well as sites where they are able to pass it on to others. We
also develop tools for language learning assessment and testing these with
interested Partners. The foundational connection between language and
wellbeing and the overarching goal to document language revitalization efforts
across Canada frame and unite the research themes of our project.

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant, under the supervision of Dr. Onowa McIvor, will
carry out independent research related to Indigenous adult language learning.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and carry out community-based research related to Indigenous
language learning
- Participate in Partnership knowledge creation and sharing, including
presenting at All-Partners’ Gatherings and other relevant conferences, as well
as publish in academic journals and other relevant media
- Contribute expertise to at least one research theme (see www.netolnew.ca).
Eligibility requirements:
- Completed a PhD in a discipline relevant to Indigenous language
revitalization, including but not limited to education, linguistics,
anthropology, public health, language assessment, etc. Ideally, but not
necessarily, the PhD will have been completed in the four years immediately
prior to the start.
- Lived experience in an Indigenous community
- Knowledge of an Indigenous language
- Demonstrated research experience related to Indigenous language
revitalization, adult language learning, or similar fields
- Participation in community-based and community-driven projects
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with excellent
communication skills
- Willing to work or regularly meet on site at UVIC (negotiable)
