Linguistics Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Morris Halle passed away on the 2nd of April, in Cambridge, Mass., where he
lived.

His work shaped the field of Generative Phonology, disclosing a new way of
cohabitation between phonological analysis and grammatical informations.

Halle is the author of some of the most influential works in the discipline,
such as ''Preliminaries to speech analysis'' (1963, but 1952[1], 1955[2],
1961[3]), with C.G.M. Fant and R. Jakobson; ''Fundamentals of language''
(1956), with R. Jakobson; ''The sound pattern of English'' (1968), with N.
Chomsky.
