Job Title: Post-Doc in (Computational) Linguistics - A processing-friendly Grammar Project
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics; Syntax
Description:
While psycholinguistic studies show that sentence processing goes
incrementally "from left to right" (i.e. sequentially with respect to how
words are produced and perceived, Bever 1970, Fodor 1978, De Vincenzi 1990,
MacDonald et al. 1994, a.o.), the prevailing models of theoretical syntax are
often indifferent (Pollard and Sag 1994) or even in conflict (Chomsky 1995)
with this assumption of incrementality and lexical items processing order.
This project is an attempt to fill this interdisciplinary gap: starting with
Phillips (1996) and a computational (re)definition of the basic phrase
structure building operations (Chesi 2012-15 a.o.) we aim at improving the
grammatical description behind the incremental construction of syntactic
constituents from left to right. The implementation of a Parsing algorithm
(Kobele 2012, Chesi 2004) and complexity metrics refinements (e.g. Lewis &
Vasishth 2005, Chesi & Moro 2015) will be central components of this project.
This research project will be hosted at NETS, IUSS Center for Neurocognition,
Epistemology and Theoretical Syntax (http://www.nets.iusspavia.it/).

Selection Criteria:
As part of the selection process, the candidate should submit a (short)
research project within the scope of the present call. Her/his knowledge in
(computational) linguistics (e.g. parsing and corpus querying) will also be
evaluated, as well as the mastery of the fundamental references for this topic
(Earley 1970, Hale 2001 (ACL), Phillips 1996, 2003, Collins 2003 (CL), Gibson
2000, Lewis, Vasishth 2005, Chesi 2015).
Other criteria for the evaluation will include past research experience in
(computational) linguistics at national and / or international level;
scientific publications related to the research area; good knowledge of
English.
Please, indicate "Tematica 2: Studio di un modello grammaticale
psicolinguisticamente plausibile e trasparente rispetto a metriche di
complessità strutturale (SSD: L‐LIN01)" in your application!
Conditions:
3 years position (after 1 year, the progresses are evaluated and the position
extended for extra 2 years if the evaluation will be positive), € 19.367,00
per year (after taxes)
