Description:

The Division of the Humanities of the University of Chicago invites
applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Lecturer position to support a
new program in Digital Studies of Language, Culture, and History beginning in
academic year 2018-2019.

The Lecturer in Digital Studies will teach six quarter-length courses per year
(two per quarter) on computer programming, statistics, and software tools and
techniques relevant to linguistic, cultural, and historical research. These
courses will include an introductory course on computer programming using the
Python programming language; a course on basic mathematics and statistics; and
a course on data analysis using R with emphasis on textual, visual, and sonic
data related to human language, culture, and history. The Lecturer will also
teach some or all of the other courses in the Digital Studies program on
natural language processing, data management, and data publication on the Web.

In addition to teaching six courses, the Lecturer will serve as an adviser for
students' software projects and will perform administrative tasks related to
the program. Administrative duties include:
- attending meetings of the Digital Studies faculty committee to give advice
and information concerning the program;
- obtaining pedagogical resources and computational tools for the Digital
Studies courses and student projects;
- researching and collecting information concerning best practices in digital
humanities teaching and research;
- serving as a liaison with the staff of the University's Research Computing
Center, Library, and Information Technology Services to facilitate the
provision of technical support and training for students and faculty in the
Digital Studies program.

The Lecturer will work closely with University of Chicago faculty members to
develop the Digital Studies program to meet the needs of students in the
humanities and humanistic social sciences who wish to acquire computational
skills but have little or no background in computing and mathematics.

Required competencies for the position include prior teaching experience at
the university level and formal training in computer science. Experience in
software development, and either a background in humanities or experience
working with scholars in the humanities to develop software tools, are highly
preferred. A Master's degree is required by the start date of appointment; PhD
is preferred.
