Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Sociolinguistics
Call Deadline: 25-Oct-2018
Meeting Description:
Scholarship has well entered the era of complexifying representations of
gender and sexuality, representations which have emerged through a diverse
range of semiotics, and in continuously shifting and hence hybridized
authentications of language and identity. Current social mores, social
policies, and sociolinguistic mobilities have also contributed to these
shifting authenticities, thus innoculating, or at least preparing, scholarship
against reversion to positivist development of gender and sexuality.
Consequently, despite the extensive work that has emerged to aid this, we are
still at a crossroads of essentialist notions of sexuality, and
constructivitst notions of new representations of gender.
The current Colloquium seeks to draw out scholarship and rhetoric related to
new and emerging conceptions and developments of hybridity and paradoxical
representations of Asian gender and sexuality, through a diverse range of
semiotic channels and modes. These semiotic affordances, which have existed
throughout eras of positivist referrals to gender and sexuality, yet which
have recently achieved increasing observance, seek new problematizations.
The Colloquium will be organized at the CALA conference in Siem Reap,
Cambodia, in January 23 - 26, 2019.

Call for Papers:
The Colloquium thus invites rhetoric contributing to the scholarship, and asks
participants to consider the following questions:
1. How do forms of media, in their respective, complementary, or hybridized,
appeals, complexify gender and sexuality?
2. What transformations do localized and non-localized (transnational)
economies (financial, political, sociocultural, security, (post)colonial,
discursive, etc) exert on conceptions of emerging forms of gender and
sexuality?
3. What semiotic factors have sought to impede our understandings of Asian
gender and sexuality, and the hybridities they exude, as Asian and non-Asian
observers?
4. To what extent do global representations of Asian gender and sexuality
facilitate a non-essentialist disclosure of these identities?
5. What are some ways in which current perpetual attempts, and their
respective discourses, to encroach socioculturally, politically, and
economically by Western countries on Asian regions motivate shifts in
representations of gender and sexuality.
